Exciting news for Merthyr Tydfil! Plans have been approved to build nearly 50 new homes in the Penydarren area. This new development will feature a mix of homes, including 24 two-bedroom, 4 three-bedroom, and 19 one-bedroom flats. Located next to Hillcrest and Mitchell Crescent, the site will also include informal recreational spaces and a central pedestrian link.

While there was an objection citing concerns over the loss of open views and potential impact on property values, council planning officers assured that the design is thoughtfully integrated with the neighbourhood. Despite some homes being three-storey, from Mitchell Crescent they’ll appear as two-storey, maintaining harmony with the existing skyline.
Councillor Clive Jones supports the project, recognising the pressing need for such housing even though he wished for more three-bedroom options. The council sees this development as a key step in delivering much-needed affordable housing in the area, aligning with the local development plan’s objectives.

Another win? This project enhances biodiversity and connectivity, being well situated near public transport and active travel routes without raising highway safety concerns.
