### Shocking Case of Domestic Violence
Ryan McCarthy, 41, has been sentenced to two years in prison for horrific domestic abuse against his partner. The abuse began after she suffered a miscarriage, with McCarthy becoming increasingly violent and manipulative.
In one chilling incident, after an argument turned physical, he strangled her until she lost consciousness and then poured Coca Cola over her when she came to. The terrifying ordeal didn’t stop there; he dragged her back into the house, locking her in to prevent her escape. His reign of control included violent episodes during her subsequent pregnancy and even attempts to forcibly take their newborn from her.
The court also heard about a disturbing moment when he chased her and their child, hurling abuse and attempting to take the baby from her car. A courageous neighbour intervened, helping the victim escape and call the police.
McCarthy pleaded guilty to charges including intentional strangulation and controlling behaviour. Judge Paul Hopkins described his actions as “simply appalling,” comparing McCarthy’s treatment of his partner to being worse than how one would treat a dog.
With 10 previous convictions to his name, including battery against a former partner, McCarthy’s sentencing highlights the serious consequences of domestic violence. He also faces a restraining order for six years.
