In a chilling incident that shook Newport, Paul Morrissey, 42, has been sentenced to 14 years after he fashioned a 7ft spear and used it in a violent attack on two separate victims. The court heard Morrissey was seeking someone who owed him money and turned to extreme measures when he didn’t get the answers he wanted.

On June 7th, he stormed into the home of his first victim, Marc Wilson, questioning him about an individual called ‘Mousey’. When Wilson failed to provide information, Morrissey became violent, attacking him with the spear and causing severe injuries to his neck, reportedly “spurting with blood.”

Morrissey, clearly under the influence at the time, continued his rampage later that day, targeting another victim in Cardiff. Both victims recognised him, which, along with DNA evidence, led to his arrest.

Shocking courtroom testimony revealed the extent of the trauma suffered by Wilson, who was left fearing for his and his elderly father’s life. Wilson recounted the terrifying ordeal: “I thought I was going to die,” he said, sharing how adrenaline kept him going despite his injuries.

The chilling attacks were described as “wholly unnecessary and disproportionate violence” by Judge Eugene Egan, who imposed a 14-year sentence with an additional five-year extended licence period. Morrissey must serve two-thirds of his custodial sentence before being considered for parole.

Detective Constable Matthew Emberton from Gwent Police commented on the case, emphasising the serious nature of Morrissey’s actions: “Both victims received serious injuries and spent time in hospital as the result of Morrissey’s violent actions… We will not tolerate such acts.”

The community is left questioning why Morrissey acted with such brutality, especially towards someone he had known for 30 years. Morrissey’s lawyer suggested a “traumatic experience” in 2023 contributed to his behaviour, but it was little comfort to those affected.

This horrifying incident is a stark reminder of the impact of violent crime and the importance of swift justice. Stay informed and vigilant.
