Plans for 30 affordable homes in picturesque New Quay, Ceredigion, are causing quite the stir! Developers, after seeing their £7.5m proposal rejected last year, are back on the scene, appealing the council’s decision. This move has sparked renewed debate in the coastal town famous for its second homes and holiday lets.
🚫 Opponents are worried about the impact on local businesses, with the proposed development located on the existing Central Car Park. Concerned business owners argue that reducing parking spaces could harm the town’s bustling tourism trade. They even launched a petition which quickly gathered 2,500 signatures, urging the council to “Save New Quay car park – Protect our future”.
🏗️ The developers, a housing association, say the project would introduce nearly 100 new permanent residents and retain a significant number of parking spaces for public access. They argue it’s a necessary step to meet local housing needs.
🤔 Despite local objections and fears of increased antisocial behaviour, council officers initially recommended the proposal’s approval based on these benefits. However, the project was ultimately turned down in a tight vote.
