For over 180 years, the proud fortress-like walls of Neptune Hall have faced the mighty Irish Sea from Tywyn. But now, this historic building is only 18 metres from the shore, and the pounding waves are threatening its legacy.
🔍 Owner Leigh Tunnadine has witnessed firsthand how the raging storms transform the coastline, causing the once-solid structure to shudder. “The house was literally shaking,” she shared. The beach access road, Neptune Road slipway, is now closed off, showcasing visible signs of deterioration like rusting steel reinforcements and collapsing concrete.
The cause? Not just nature’s fury, but weakening coastal defences. Leigh has even taken to picking steel rods off the beach, worried about the safety of children and pets. “The erosion over the last four or five years has been shocking,” she noted, hoping for a longer-lasting solution from the local council.
🏗️ There’s hope on the horizon, though! Plans are underway for refurbishing the seawall and slipway. Recent council efforts included injecting concrete to stabilise weakened sections. However, with funding challenges, residents like Leigh are left wondering if these patch-ups will suffice in the long run.
The history of Tywyn’s coastline is intriguing, once a vast expanse of sand, now a rapidly receding landscape. Coastal erosion has reduced the beach width significantly, leaving cobbles exposed – potential projectiles during future storms. A fierce storm in 1929 marked this transformation, and since then, the shoreline has been in constant evolution.
