🔍 An inspection of the Cwm Seren mental health unit at Hafan Derwen Hospital, Carmarthen has revealed several concerns that need urgent attention. During unannounced visits, inspectors found peeling paint, damaged floors, damp patches, and broken equipment throughout the unit. The outdoor facilities weren’t much better, with potential fall risks from poorly maintained gardens and slippery surfaces.

Concerns also emerged about the availability of exercise options for patients. With most gym equipment out of order and a lack of properly trained staff, physical activity was limited, impacting patients’ recovery journey. Some patients reported uncomfortable mattresses and a lack of meal variety during their stay, with boredom from repetitive daily routines being an issue.

🔧 Despite these setbacks, staff are praised for their dedication and compassion, ensuring patients feel safe and supported. However, the report urges significant improvements in the environment, training compliance, and overall patient experience. A psychologist position has been vacant for over two years, limiting essential therapeutic interventions.
🚀 The Hywel Dda University Health Board is taking action with a comprehensive improvement plan already underway. New gym equipment is on order, staff training is set to be bolstered, and upgrades to patient facilities are in progress. Patient feedback mechanisms are being strengthened to better tailor care approaches.
💬 Chief Executive Alun Jones emphasised the need for a swift response to ensure patients receive respectful and recovery-focused care. While acknowledging the challenges, the health board is committed to elevating the quality of care, with the aim to foster a more therapeutic and engaging environment for all patients. 🏥✨
Let’s hope these changes bring the momentum needed to enhance the quality and safety at Cwm Seren!
