Exciting news for Swansea! 🎉 YGG Bryn Tawe is on the brink of a significant transformation as Swansea Council and the Welsh Government team up for a major upgrade. Next week, council chiefs will consider a £32 million commitment for this project, pending final approval from the Welsh Government.
With 873 students on the roll as of last year, this upgrade will not only boost capacity but also support the increasing demand for Welsh language education. The Bryn Tawe upgrade has been in the pipeline since 2021, moving through various stages, and now it’s closer than ever to becoming a reality. A construction company is already on board, working on final designs!
The Welsh Government evaluates projects like this on a case-by-case basis and typically shares most of the costs, with councils covering the rest. A decisive business case decision is expected on February 26th. Although the specifics of the expansion aren’t fully detailed, past reports suggest a new teaching block for sixth formers and students with additional learning needs, plus new sports facilities and renovations.
Originally projected to cost over £18 million, the plan has evolved, taking into account rising construction costs and inflation. Cllr Robert Smith expressed his enthusiasm two years ago, highlighting the project’s potential to transform the education environment and facilities for young people at Bryn Tawe.
