Elderly Man Robbed of £500 by Undocumented Individuals during Bank Withdrawal

Two men found themselves in hot water after a shocking incident at a cash point in Merthyr Tydfil town centre. The culprits, Marian Barbu and Samoila Vasile, were caught red-handed stealing £500 from an 88-year-old gentleman as he tried to withdraw money from Lloyds Bank. This heart-wrenching event left the elderly victim feeling vulnerable and deprived of his independence, unable to visit town alone anymore.

The disturbing event unfolded on January 9th last year when Barbu distracted the victim with conversation, instructing him to “Cancel” as the money came out of the ATM. As the elderly man stood stunned, Barbu swiftly pocketed the cash and placed a mysterious device on the ATM before making his escape. The daylight robbery came to the attention of authorities, and both Barbu and Vasile were apprehended the very next day near the M5 in Gloucestershire.

Sentencing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court saw Barbu receive three years in prison, while Vasile was sentenced to 12 months. The judge condemned their actions, highlighting how they exploited the victim’s vulnerability for their gain.

Despite the harsh reality of their sentences, both defendants expressed personal woes. Barbu faces separation from his five children living in the UK due to impending deportation to Romania. Vasile, too, showed remorse, with concerns about his young daughter back home.
