The long game is over for Dean Mayze, a 38-year-old retreat owner from Mid Wales, who was on the lam for nearly three years. In a twist that sounds straight out of a crime thriller, Dean was finally nabbed in Romania after a bizarre incident that escalated in the peaceful locale of Abercraf.
In December 2022, events went south at the Hafan y Coed Centre when Dean hurled a corrosive substance on guest Kiefer Price’s face! Talk about a retreat gone wrong. The drama unfolded as Kiefer was trying to retrieve his bikes locked up in a store cupboard. He’d had it with his room’s lack of proper facilities and after some confrontation, things got ugly with Dean throwing a mystery liquid during a heated moment.
Kiefer was rushed to A&E with chemical burns affecting his eyes, needing intensive treatment to prevent blindness. Ouch! But Dean didn’t stick around; he bolted across Europe, leaving trails from Swindon to Swindon to Serbia, eluding police all the while. Yet, eventually, justice caught up. Extradited back to the UK, Dean faced Swansea Crown Court. The judge heard of his harsh prison time in Romania, but there was no escape from an 18-month sentence for GBH and a restraining order.
