Councillors in Wales are set to receive a pay boost, just as council tax hikes loom on the horizon. With a salary increase of 6.4%, councillors will now earn £21,044 annually. This decision follows the latest Annual Remuneration Report and aligns with the average pay rise across Wales.

The spotlight isn’t just on councillors; council leaders and executive members are also in line for similar raises. However, allowances for community and town councils will remain unchanged. The push for pay increases comes despite some councils expressing a desire for more modest increments.

Shereen Williams, Chief Executive of the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru, expressed gratitude for the feedback received during the consultation process. Williams acknowledged the stretched council budgets and the rising cost of living, emphasising the dedication of councillors who often juggle these roles alongside other jobs.
The commission plans to review how councillor pay rises are determined, looking for alternative methods from 2027 onwards. This first remuneration report by the commission, taking over from the former Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales, has already sparked much conversation. As local residents prepare for increased council tax bills, this development is sure to keep the dialogue going.
