Last month, a troubling incident unfolded in Blaenymaes, Swansea. Thomas Jenkins, aged 28, was arrested after a violent argument with his girlfriend, just weeks after being released from prison for another assault.

In the early hours of January 30th, police responded to an abandoned 999 call. Upon arrival, they discovered that Jenkins had thrown a mobile phone at his girlfriend in a cocaine-fuelled rage, leaving her with a cut above her eye. The prosecutor described the heated confrontation, during which Jenkins accused her of infidelity.

Officers found Jenkins in the bedroom, and after initially downplaying the situation, he confessed to throwing the phone and expressed remorse. Despite his girlfriend’s reluctance to press charges, the severity of the incident led to Jenkins’ arrest.

Recorder Andrew Hammond highlighted the victim’s evident fear and distress, as captured on police bodycam. Jenkins pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and was also found with a small amount of cannabis during his arrest. With 14 prior offences, including a recent GBH conviction, Jenkins’ troubled past with substance abuse and violence came under scrutiny.

The judge recognised Jenkins’ ADHD diagnosis and his need for rehabilitation, with family support noted. However, he emphasised the gravity of domestic violence, sentencing Jenkins to 18 months in prison. “You need to understand that this path only leads to one destination,” he warned.

No restraining order was issued as the victim opposed it. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked violent behaviour and the importance of seeking help for substance issues. Stay safe, and remember: support is available for anyone affected by domestic violence.
