🚨 Big News from the Valleys: Fight to Save Our Palliative Care Unit! 🚨

The community is rallying against plans to close the beloved palliative care unit at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash. This unit has been a cornerstone for compassionate end-of-life care and has touched countless lives with its dedicated, person-centred service.

Led by Merthyr Tydfil’s Council Leader, Councillor Brent Carter, supporters are voicing their concerns to the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board. They argue that closing the unit would leave patients in the Merthyr and Cynon Valleys without local access to vital specialist care.
A whopping 3,000+ residents have already signed petitions, highlighting the deep public concern and unwavering demand to preserve this essential service. The current proposal suggests centralising care at the Royal Glamorgan and Princess of Wales hospitals. Yet the community fears this would add unnecessary travel burdens on families during emotionally taxing times.
Councillor Carter, speaking for many, emphasised: “Patients deserve fair, compassionate, and accessible end-of-life care. Centralising services strips the community of dignity, support, and the trusted care they’ve relied on.”
The health board argues the need to revamp services to meet growing demands, focusing on home-based care which many prefer. They assure the public their aim is to strengthen and sustain support both in the community and in hospitals.
Still, the community urges a rethink. They’re asking for the restoration of local services and a pledge to prevent staff shortages from driving changes that could impact their loved ones.
The passion and determination to keep Ward 6 open show the power of community spirit. Let’s hope for a resolution that honours the commitment to provide quality end-of-life care locally.
