🏆 Dramatic By-Election Twist in Penarth! 🗳️

In a surprising turn of events, Reform UK has clinched victory in the Penarth Town Council by-election with Zak Weaver emerging as the winner. What makes this story intriguing? Weaver was listed on the ballot as a Conservative! 🌟

Having jumped ship just a week before the polls, Weaver’s late switch left no time to update the ballots, causing quite the stir among locals. Despite this shuffle, he secured a solid 38% of the vote and will now represent the Plymouth ward. His win reduces the Conservative presence on the council to just one member.

Weaver, previously the deputy chief of staff to Welsh Conservative leader Darren Millar, assures constituents his commitment is to the town, not party ties. However, some Penarth residents were less than thrilled about his last-minute political about-face. Conrad Bartlett called the situation “totally outrageous,” expressing doubt over Weaver’s continued post.
Aled Thomas of Plaid Cymru even accused Weaver of betraying the community. Meanwhile, returning officer Rob Thomas highlighted that Welsh law provides no means to alter the ballot following a change in political allegiance. 🗳️
The by-election was necessitated by the disqualification of Ben Gray, who became ineligible after missing six months of council meetings. Interestingly, Gray himself had left the Conservative Party a couple of years prior.
Campaign buzz has centred on Weaver’s pledges to tackle Penarth’s hot-button issues, like suspended parking charges and infrastructure improvements. He took the lead with 546 votes, beating the Green Party’s Todd Bailey who garnered 452, while Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru trailed with 221 and 204 votes respectively.
