🌿 Hold off on mowing the lawn just yet! 🛑 Thinking of firing up that mower for the first cut of the year? You might want to wait a bit longer. Lawn expert Chris McIlroy shares the lowdown: cutting your grass too soon, when the temps are chilly, might just do more harm than good. ❄️

Why wait? Your grass isn’t quite ready to wake up from its winter nap. Grass growth kicks off when temperatures consistently hit above 8C to 10C, so those blades should probably stay in the shed until at least March. Keeping your lawn longer now helps it withstand winter’s bite and protects the roots from cold snaps and diseases. 🌱

What can you do in the meantime? There’s plenty to keep busy with! Rather than mowing, clear away debris like twigs and leaves that’ve gathered over the winter months. This simple clean-up can prevent these bits from blocking essential sunlight and nutrients. 🌞
Thinking about fertiliser? It’s a great idea! Give your lawn an extra boost to fight off winter-induced stress and set it up for a healthy spring comeback. When you finally do mow, remember to set those blades high. You only want to trim about the top third of the grass to keep it robust and ready for the summer. 🌻
Getting impatient for that perfectly trimmed garden can be tough, but holding off a bit longer means a lusher, greener lawn down the line. Keep checking the weather forecast and play it smart! 🌼
