Two men, Matthew Hill, 38, and Richard Walker, 64, have been sentenced to four years in prison for orchestrating a £900,000 fraud scheme that shook up the Welsh food manufacturing company Zorba. Over six years, Hill and Walker managed to deceive Zorba out of huge sums by using fake documentation and invoices. Hill, a trusted warehouse manager, teamed up with Walker, the director of Zebra Print Design Logistics, which was Zorba’s supplier, to pull off the con.

The deceit went on from 2018 to 2024 until things came to light after the company was sold in 2024. Due to this despicable act, many employees faced ‘significant stress and anxiety,’ with some losing their jobs during a very tough financial period for Zorba.

The fraud didn’t just hurt the company financially; it shook the very trust on which business relationships are built. Even though Hill and Walker showed remorse and tried to own up to their actions, the impact of their crime was described as “devastating” by Zorba’s Chief Financial Officer.

Hill was caught having stashed over £385,000 in a separate account before he was found out. On top of everything, both men pleaded guilty, and Hill’s defence even claimed he acted under ‘personal and financial pressure.’

Zorba, which employed 450 people, had been battling financially and later sold off due to pressures, only to have this scandal erupt and challenge its hard-fought stability.

Let’s hope Zorba’s strength isn’t overshadowed by this incident, and the business continues to move forward post this turmoil.
