Everton’s newly-lit stadium became a beacon of hope and solidarity on Monday night, as it glowed in rainbow colours for a very special little boy. Eight-month-old Rupert Smith from Wales is battling an incredibly rare condition called alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC), which can lead to episodes of paralysis, seizures, and breathing difficulties. Despite these challenges, Rupert’s resilience shines through, captivating everyone with his bright smile.

During the Everton vs. Manchester United match, fans united in a heartfelt minute-long applaud in the 7th minute to show their support for Rupert, who had just turned seven months old when diagnosed. His family, lifelong Everton supporters, found strength in the gesture. “It means more than we can put into words,” expressed Rupert’s father, David. “Football has the power to unite people, and in that moment, Rupert isn’t just a baby with a rare condition – he’s part of something bigger.”

Rupert’s family has launched ‘Rupert’s Rainbow’, an initiative to raise awareness and funds for his treatment. With their sights set on the US, where promising research into AHC is underway, they’re aiming for £1.5 million to ensure Rupert can access emerging treatments and consultations as soon as they become available.

Living with AHC requires constant vigilance. David revealed, “We monitor him closely for any triggers. It’s a life-threatening condition, so we always stay alert.” Yet, through it all, Rupert continues to smile, inspiring his family with his incredible resilience. “His courage gives us strength when we feel exhausted or scared,” David shared.
