🏉 Big Moves in the Rugby World! 🌍
Heads up, rugby fans! Cardiff Rugby’s head coach, Corniel van Zyl, is reportedly in the running for a top position abroad. The 47-year-old, who transitioned from player to coach, is on a three-man shortlist for the head coach role at Benetton, competing in the United Rugby Championship.
Van Zyl, known for his eight-year stint in Treviso as a player, has made a mark at Cardiff since stepping up to replace Matt Sherratt. Under his leadership, Cardiff delivered an impressive performance this season, claiming seven wins from 11 matches and sitting fifth in the URC table—the highest of any Welsh team this season. They’re also gearing up for a European Challenge Cup knockout against Benetton in April!
While Van Zyl’s impact at Cardiff is undeniable, his potential move to Benetton looks challenging. He’s up against seasoned contenders like former Springbok coach Jake White and rugby stalwart Richard Cockerill, both heavyweights with international pedigree. White is eyeing a return after departing from the Bulls, whereas Cockerill is fresh from a stint with Georgia and Black Lion.
As the Italian club hunts for an “international standard” coach, could Van Zyl be the surprise choice, or will one of the veterans clinch it? The rugby world is watching! 🏆
