Footy community mourns the tragic loss of 19-year-old Tristan O’Keefe, who drowned after falling into a river under the influence of drugs. This heartbreaking incident took place in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, last summer. CCTV footage revealed Tristan in a confused state on June 9, 2025, stumbling towards the river where he was later found.

A post-mortem confirmed a significant amount of amitriptyline, commonly used for pain and migraines, in his system. Disturbingly, police found messages on his phone about consuming a “whole bottle” and a search for “amitriptyline liquid UK” just hours before he went missing. The coroner concluded that his intoxication led to severe coordination impairment, leading to his accidental drowning.
Tristan was a beloved player for Pontnewynydd AFC, remembered fondly as a “bright light” by his club. With heavy hearts, they’ve retired his number three shirt to honour his memory. His teammates, coaches, and all at the club cherish the joy, energy, and strength he brought to every game, training session, and beyond. Tristan’s presence was instrumental in their undefeated league campaign, which led to promotion to the Gwent Premier League.

The loss feels unfathomable, and Pontnewynydd AFC extends their deepest condolences to his family and friends. As we remember Tristan—forever 19, forever our number three—we hold onto the love and laughter he shared with his club and community. Rest in peace, Tristan.
