Meet William Hanson, a builder who swindled elderly and vulnerable residents in Cardiff out of a whopping £1 million. Hanson, 51, spun lies about much-needed home repairs, charging unsuspecting victims for work that either wasn’t necessary or was poorly done.

One heartbreaking story involves a 93-year-old woman who was scammed out of £35,000, having initially believed she owed just £3,500. To make matters worse, a £15,000 refund cheque initially bounced, leaving her family to pick up the pieces.

Hanson’s deceit didn’t stop there. He convinced another elderly gentleman that his roof needed replacing at a cost of £30,000—money which went to unnecessary repairs while true issues were left untouched. Many of his victims, some as old as 86, found themselves in financial and emotional despair, forced to question whom they could trust.

Caught and brought to justice, Hanson has now been ordered to pay back the considerable sum of £1,079,831. The Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) hearing was held at Cardiff Crown Court, where Judge Shomon Khan made it clear that Hanson has three months to come up with the money—or face an extended seven-year stint behind bars.

Hanson has a history of offenses including harassment, fraud, and even fly-tipping on land designated for social housing. His current sentence totals five years and two months, half of which will be served in prison and the rest on licence. He’s also slapped with a criminal behaviour order, stopping him from any kind of home improvement work for the next decade.
