In a deeply emotional courtroom scene, Mary Power mourned the devastating loss of her son, Michael Barron, a 38-year-old aspiring actor whose life was tragically cut short. Michael’s dreams ended in tragedy after meeting Josh Baxter, 28, through the dating app Grindr. Their encounter took a deadly turn during an ‘extreme’ BDSM session that led to suffocation. Despite his claims that it was accidental, Baxter was found guilty of intentional strangulation and grievous bodily harm. Judge Tina Landale sentenced him to four years in prison, criticising his reckless disregard for warnings about the dangers of choking.

Mary shared her heartfelt grief in court, painting a picture of a son who “deserved to feel loved and safe.” She spoke of their close bond, saying, “It wasn’t an extravagant life, but it was so full of love and it was ours.” Since Michael’s passing, small joys like baking lemon drizzle cake have become painful reminders of her loss.

Michael’s sister, Lisa Power-O’Callaghan, also honoured her brother, highlighting his unfulfilled dream of becoming an actor. He had appeared in popular shows like Hollyoaks and Emmerdale and was poised for success. She described the family’s ongoing heartbreak, saying life feels “colder, lonelier, and incomplete” without him.

Josh Baxter ignored earlier warnings and the evident risks involved, a negligence the court couldn’t overlook. Despite his defence’s assertion that the acts were consensual, the judge deemed Baxter’s actions dangerously reckless.

Our thoughts are with Michael’s family and everyone whose life he touched. Let’s remember him for his kindness, ambition, and the joy he brought to those around him. 💔
