On St David’s Day 20 years ago, a building that has become an iconic symbol of Welsh democracy was unveiled. Behind this landmark is architect Ivan Harbour, who took on the challenge of designing a space that embodies the spirit of Wales and its journey into self-governance. 🌟
As a young director at the famed architectural firm RSHP, Ivan had a vision – to create a transparent and inviting space where politics and public life intersect seamlessly. The Senedd, with its distinctive circular chamber, ensures that every voice is equal and promotes a unique form of interaction between elected representatives and the electorate.
The building itself is a masterpiece of design, drawing inspiration from Welsh nature and materials. The use of Welsh timber and slate speaks to sustainability, while its innovative architecture captures the natural light and connects with the surrounding environment of Cardiff Bay. 🌊
One of its defining features is the undulating roof, which embraces the idea of an open sky, symbolising Wales’ openness to the world. Ivan wanted the space to evoke a public square, a ‘living room’ for Wales where democracy is lived and breathed every day.
Fast forward 20 years and the Senedd is expanding to accommodate 96 members come May, reflecting its growing role in Welsh governance. This evolution is a testament to Ivan’s vision of a building that adapts and endures. The recent updates even include new lecterns, allowing every member to present and engage actively with the community.
Ivan reminisces about the project with pride, grateful for the opportunity to shape an essential part of Welsh civic life. For him and his team, the lasting success is evident in how the building has been embraced and celebrated by the people of Wales.
