Meet Emma Giannuzzi, a brave mum from Newport, who discovered the hidden dangers of sunbeds the hard way—fighting melanoma not just once, but twice. 😟

Emma started using sunbeds at 16, believing it was just another beauty routine. She often left sunbed sessions with burns and was even offered tanning accelerators with no sun protection, a testament to how unaware many salons were of the risks involved. Like many of us, Emma thought, “Cancer? That’s for older folks, not me.” But she’s here to tell you, it can happen to anyone.

At a party, everything changed when she noticed a suspicious mark on her stomach. Initially dismissing it as a chocolate smudge, it turned out to be a mole—a dangerous one. Emma was diagnosed with stage 1A melanoma, a type of skin cancer that’s primarily caused by UV light from the sun and sunbeds. Catching it early was crucial, allowing for treatment before it could spread.

Fast forward 13 years, Emma had to confront melanoma again during a routine check-up while pregnant with her second child. The emotional toll was heavy. “Knowing my baby was growing while I had cancer was absolutely devastating,” she confessed. The guilt was palpable, but Emma’s strength shone through.

Today, Emma is sunbed-free and advocates for safer tanning alternatives, such as fake tan. 🧴✨ Her message is clear: chasing that “base tan” isn’t worth the risk. Remember, early detection is key. Keep an eye on your skin using the ABCDE method: look for Asymmetry, irregular Borders, multiple Colours, Diameter over 6mm, and Evolution in shape or size. If in doubt, get checked!

“Sunbeds are just not worth the risk for a temporary tan,” Emma states, encouraging others to love the skin they’re in safely. Protect yourself and say no to sunbeds! 💪🌟#HealthAwareness #SkinSafety #MelanomaPrevention
