🚗💷 Big news for all you electric vehicle enthusiasts out there! If you’re planning to buy an EV before April, there’s an important change you should know about to avoid a hefty fee.

Starting April 2026, the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement is set to rise from £40,000 to £50,000 for electric cars. If your new ride’s price tag crosses that line, you could be facing an extra charge of over £2,000 over five years. 😲

Motoring expert Steve Ramsey advises caution, saying, “Just upgrading the trim on your new car could be very costly. Remember, it’s the list price that counts, not any deal you strike with the dealer.”
But it’s not just EVs feeling the pinch. Petrol and diesel models aren’t off the hook, particularly those premium models. The first-year VED tax is now linked to emissions, potentially leading to higher costs for certain vehicles.
With rising driving costs and our poor road conditions, it’s understandable that many feel like their money just doesn’t go as far as it used to. And for those with older cars? Maintenance costs continue to add up.
Feeling frustrated? You’re not alone. A new Parliamentary petition is calling for a tax break for cars aged between 20 and 39 years, suggesting a 50% VED reduction to promote keeping older, functional vehicles on the road. The Government is yet to make any changes but promises to keep taxes under review. 🤞
Let’s see how this shakes out and if any adjustments are made to these plans. What are your thoughts on these changes? Share your views and let’s keep the conversation going! ✍️
