Laura Liddle, a 31-year-old from Bristol, is on a mission to raise awareness after discovering her persistent itch was actually a rare form of cancer. Struggling for months with unbearable pain, itchiness, and swelling, Laura was initially misdiagnosed despite numerous GP visits. She was finally referred to a hospital gynaecology department where a biopsy revealed pre-cancerous VIN 3, which later developed into vulval cancer. Following surgeries to remove part of her labia and later her groin lymph nodes, Laura is now cancer-free and using her experience to encourage others to “know your normal.”

Laura highlights the importance of self-examination and recognising changes in your body, especially in private areas. “A lot of young girls don’t touch or look at their vaginas,” she says, emphasising how important it is to break the taboo. “You’ve got to know what’s normal for you to identify when something’s not right.” Laura’s journey began in March 2022, when she noticed an unusual swelling while recovering from groin surgery. Initially dismissing it as her natural anatomy, it wasn’t until much later that the true cause was discovered.

Through intense pain, Laura persisted, undergoing tests for various conditions like thrush and STIs, which all provided no answers. Once diagnosed, Laura found strength to endure treatments and surgeries. “When they told me I had vulval cancer, I was more concerned about how it would affect my family.” Now she’s spreading the message far and wide, urging women to check themselves and seek medical advice if anything feels off. She’s even encouraging men to help their partners be observant.

Vulval cancer, affecting the area around the vagina, often comes with symptoms like itching, sores, or changes in skin colour. Though rare and more common in older women, Laura’s story shows it can happen to anyone. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder to regularly monitor our health and push for answers when something feels amiss. Stay informed, know your body, and don’t hesitate to seek medical help if something seems unusual.
