Exciting changes are on the horizon for residents in the Vale of Glamorgan! The local council is deciding on a potential 5.5% increase in council tax for the 2026-27 financial year. If approved, residents with a Band D property will see their bills rise by approximately £1.75 per week. While this is one of the larger increases compared to other Welsh councils like Swansea and Cardiff, it’s still less than what’s being proposed in Monmouthshire and Caerphilly.

Interestingly, the Vale of Glamorgan has historically kept its tax hikes below the national average, and aims to continue doing so. Despite this trend, the council stresses the importance of maintaining revenues to sustain future operations, especially with uncertain government funding in the upcoming years.

To address a budget gap of £6.584 million, they plan to implement various strategies, including reducing pension costs and identifying reshaping opportunities. Schools and social services have been consuming a large part of the council’s budget, with a notable rise in recent years. However, this year, they’re expecting a pause, thanks to lowered employer pension contributions and an improved settlement from the Welsh Government.

The proposal is set to be reviewed on March 9. What’s your take on these changes? Let us know! 💬
