Fed up with the noise and disruption from increasing traffic, residents of Bangor Street in the Roath and Penylan area of Cardiff are taking matters into their own hands. They’re threatening to barricade their street, allowing access only for emergency services, in a desperate attempt for peace.

The root of the frustration? Wellfield Road, a bustling high street nearby, which has recently seen a surge of food and drink businesses. This development has turned quiet Bangor Street into a makeshift service road, with delivery and waste collection trucks often rolling through as early as 4:15 AM! Residents have voiced concerns to the council but feel unheard, leaving them no choice but to consider this bold move.

Lisa Watts, a 30-year local, shared, “It’s not about being a NIMBY, it’s about saving our community. If there’s no change, we will barricade the road.” Her neighbour, Catherine Mallam, added, “Sleepless nights have become the norm, thanks to noisy bin lorries.”

Cardiff Council states it has a commercial waste contract with only one of the businesses on Wellfield Road and urges residents to report any breaches. However, with 25 eateries already established and more on the way, the impact is undeniable. Once home to quaint shops and a haberdashery, Wellfield Road’s transformation is altering community life.

Lisa hopes to see Bangor Street become a resident-only zone, but opinions are divided. Nic Finch, another resident, worries this might only shift the HGV traffic to Wellfield Road, worsening congestion and pollution.

Something’s got to give, but will it be the barricade or the council’s ear? Stay tuned for the next chapter in this street’s showdown!
