Welsh rugby legend Mike Phillips is ready to jump back into the game to help the national team! Despite the surprising silence from the rugby community after his retirement, Mike says he’s still eager to contribute his expertise.

The ex-scrum-half, who proudly wore the Wales shirt 94 times and lifted several Six Nations titles, revealed that he never received a call to share his vast experience with up-and-coming players. How strange is that? You’d think they’d want to tap into such a rich well of knowledge!

Reflecting on the lack of communication, Phillips, who retired in 2015, opened up about this on Off The Ball Breakfast as Wales prepares for their Six Nations showdown with Ireland. He highlighted how this disconnect could be part of the issues Welsh rugby faces today.
Yet, ever the passionate supporter of Welsh rugby, Mike isn’t bitter. Instead, he’s hopeful that he can still make a difference. Imagining a role helping current players and coaches or even nurturing the next generation at grassroots levels, he’s eager to see those doors open.
He expressed disbelief at the lack of follow-up: “I just thought there could have been communication there… It’s very strange.” For someone whose career spanned over 15 glorious years, it’s a thought-provoking insight into what might help turn the tide for Wales.
Given the current state of affairs in Welsh rugby, revisiting how former players are integrated post-retirement might just be the game-changer needed.
Come on, Wales—let’s rally behind our legends and make sure their skills and wisdom aren’t lost! 🏉✨
