After drinking at the Great Western pub, Coles walked a fellow patron’s wife home, only for the evening to spiral violently when he encountered her husband, William Murphy. Known only to each other as regulars at the same pub, their paths crossed fatally. Upon arriving home, Mr Murphy, wanting nothing more than to walk his dog, was brutally attacked. He was punched, thrown to the floor, and kicked repeatedly in the head.

The chilling detail? After the vicious assault, Coles walked back into the pub, covered in blood, admitting to the staff that he thought he had “killed someone.”

Coles, having pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm, expressed remorse. The court learned of his difficult past, including a history of witnessing domestic violence and a spiral into homelessness, which had all compounded into that fateful evening’s events.

Newport Crown Court has sentenced Coles to 39 months behind bars, and he’s been placed under a ten-year restraining order. Let’s hope that justice and healing follow this tragic moment. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own homes and communities. Stay safe and look out for each other!
