Did you know there’s a secret river flowing right beneath the heart of Caernarfon? Hidden for generations, the River Cadnant runs through a network of tunnels under the vibrant town centre and only emerges into the Menai Straits when the tide allows. You might see bubbles on the water’s surface near the Records Office if you’re lucky!

Recently, engineers launched a drone to travel the river’s deep, quiet path for the first time in decades, revealing a fascinating glimpse into the town’s past. This underground exploration is part of a hefty £675,000 project to protect 80 homes and 39 businesses from flooding, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Caernarfon’s residents. With funding from the Welsh Government and Cyngor Gwynedd, this initiative is more than just flood prevention—it’s a link to the town’s history and a beacon for its future.

Emyr Gareth, the chief engineer at Cyngor Gwynedd, revealed that a new screen system is in place to keep debris out of the river’s channels, critical in preventing potential blockages and avoiding major flooding issues.
Councillor June Jones emphasised the river’s impact on shaping Caernarfon over the years. The recent drone exploration has not only allowed engineers to safeguard the town but also sparked a renewed interest in its hidden history. The captured video is a treasure trove of insights into this underground world.
Huw Irranca-Davies, the Welsh Government’s Deputy First Minister, lauded the project as a shining example of addressing climate change challenges head-on, with nearly £590,000 invested to protect 119 properties from increasingly unpredictable weather.
For the residents of Caernarfon, this discovery isn’t just about what lies beneath—it’s about understanding their roots and securing their community’s future against the forces of nature. Isn’t it fascinating how modern technology can connect us to the history flowing right below our feet? 🏞️💧
