Tragedy struck in Birmingham as four-year-old Mayar Yahia lost her life in a car crash while walking home with her family after Eid celebrations. Javonnie Tavener, 23, has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison for causing her death by careless driving and driving uninsured. The collision, which occurred on Upper Highgate Street, also left Mayar’s mother, Sara, and another woman, Awadia Hammed, seriously injured.

The courtroom heard disturbing details about the crash. Tavener’s vehicle, a Vauxhall Corsa, collided with another car, broke through a barrier, and tragically hit Mayar and other pedestrians. Shockingly, Tavener stayed at the scene for only nine seconds before reversing and dragging Mayar, then fled on foot with a passenger.
Mayar’s devastated father, Babiker Yahia, shared in court how their lives have been shattered, saying the location of the crash serves as a constant reminder of their loss. Mayar was described as a loving and kind child, who now leaves behind her grieving siblings, who witnessed the horrific event.

The judge, His Honour Judge Cooke, noted Tavener’s excessive speed, use of cannabis, and dangerous driving in a 20mph zone, which led to the accident. Equally troubling was Tavener’s actions post-crash, including blaming a “phantom driver” and abandoning the scene without calling for help.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from the West Midlands Police urged all drivers to think twice about their actions, pointing out that careless decisions can have devastating consequences. This tragedy serves as a poignant reminder to prioritise safety on the roads at all times.
Floral tributes now mark the scene of this heartbreaking incident, symbolising the community’s mourning and hopes for justice. Our thoughts are with the Yahia family and all those affected by this senseless loss. 💔
