In a shocking turn of events, a father-and-son relationship took a devastating turn in Barmouth. Aled Powell-Jones, 48, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for assaulting his 79-year-old father, David Powell-Jones, leaving him with a broken hip.

David had been a supportive parent, frequently helping out his son by covering bills, buying groceries, and occasionally handing him cheques. On the fateful day of the incident, David delivered a meal to Aled, who later demanded £400. David returned with a cheque, but for reasons unknown, Aled suddenly turned violent.

Prosecutors revealed that Aled violently shoved his father to the ground and then proceeded to kick him, causing severe injuries that required a hip replacement. The attack left David in agonising pain, severely affecting his mobility and quality of life.

The court heard about Aled’s long-standing mental health struggles, which his parents had been concerned about for years, though he had always refused help. Despite this, there was nothing the probation service felt they could offer in the community as support.
As Aled faces time behind bars, David has to navigate life using crutches and coping with the mental trauma of the assault. Aled was also issued a 10-year restraining order, ensuring distance from his father during this difficult time.
This case underscores the importance of addressing mental health issues early, before they escalate into tragic situations. Our thoughts are with David Powell-Jones as he recovers from this harrowing experience.
