Exploring Dubai Pre-Influencer Era: A Strange Experience Ahead of the Trend

I visited Dubai before it became the influencer hotspot it is today, and even back in 2012, the city was a curious mix of futuristic ambition and surreal experiences. The Burj Khalifa towered over us, yet my taxi driver’s enthusiasm seemed unmatched by my own reaction to this towering marvel.

Starting my journey in a playground for billionaires seemed absurd for someone whose budget demanded thriftiness. But Emirates offered the most budget-friendly route, and thus I embarked on a so-called “desert adventure” with friends. Despite family concerns about Dubai’s stringent regulations, I was confident my wit would see me through.

However, the city’s rules were strict: no public displays of affection, modest dressing, and a prohibition on public drunkenness. Our budget digs landed us in Al Jaddaf, a far cry from the glittering lights of downtown Dubai, but it was an experience nonetheless.

Even on a shoestring, Dubai’s eruption of luxury skyscrapers and malls left a lasting impression. Everything felt perfect and blindingly bright, like a life-sized “Disneyland” designed with opulence over authenticity.

Yet, beneath the glitter, lies a somber truth about Dubai’s rapid ascent – tales of forced labour and grueling conditions faced by migrant workers cannot be ignored. The city’s grandeur was built atop a less glamorous foundation of questionable labour practices, a reality often left unexplored in Instagram captions.

Fast forward to today, and Dubai’s transformation into an influencer haven is palpable. Social media glows with images of a tax-free, sunlit utopia filled with luxury cars and endless shopping. But recent conflicts revealed cracks, with missile strikes shifting influencer content from glamour to unexpected chaos.

In those moments, praise for the city’s safety surfaced widely online, though it echoed more like enforced loyalty than genuine sentiment. After all, openly criticising authorities in Dubai carries heavy penalties.

So, while Dubai dazzles with its grandeur, there’s no escaping its complexities, making it a city of stark contrasts and unseen stories beneath the glitzy surface.
