π¨ Big Changes Ahead for Sick Pay π¨

Starting April 6, 2026, if you fall ill and are unable to work, you won’t have to wait several days to get financial support. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in the UK will kick in from the first day of absence! This is a game-changer, benefiting around 4.7 million women and offering greater security to lower-paid workers. π

π Out with the old: Previously, sick pay started after a waiting period. Now, eligible workers will receive SSP from day one, without concerns about earnings limits. A boost for those who’ve experienced financial strain while recovering from illness.
π¨βπ©βπ¦ Changes for Families: April will also see paternity leave become a Day One right. No more waiting to spend time with your new addition. Plus, parents gain immediate access to unpaid parental leave.
π Workplace Fairness: New amendments aim to make ‘fire and rehire’ practices tougher, ensuring better job security. Unfair dismissal protections will now apply after just six months in a job, instead of two years.
βοΈ Women in the Workplace: With enhanced sick pay, approximately 830,000 women eligible for SSP for the first time wonβt feel pressured to work when unwell. The new rules also introduce more robust protections for pregnant women, new mothers, and bring menopause action plans for large employers.
Paul Nowak from TUC commented, βToo long have women faced insufficient sick pay and exploitative work conditions. This is a crucial step towards empowering women at work.β
π Mark Your Calendars: Employment costs are set to rise as well. From April 1, 2026, the minimum wage will increase. Employers need to gear up for these shifts, emphasising workplace wellbeing as a priority.
