A heated court case is unfolding as 27-year-old Kwabena Devonish stands trial for comments she allegedly made at a Cardiff march back in November 2023. The event, drawing about 500 attendees, saw Devonish express controversial views regarding the proscribed organisation Hamas.

Prosecutors claim Devonish, during her speech, voiced support for Hamas, describing them as “fighting for freedom”. A video of her speech prompted her arrest in January 2024, and it’s been central to the proceedings at Bristol Crown Court.

In the video, Devonish reportedly states, “I am sick of being told to condemn Hamas when Hamas are fighting for freedom, Hamas are fighting for the people.” She also highlighted the plight of Palestinians, citing resistance due to occupation, and called for scrutiny on the state of Israel regarding violence and atrocities.

The charges against her are based on expressing support for a banned organisation under the Terrorism Act 2000. With the trial ongoing, more developments are sure to follow as the jury weighs the evidence.
