A tragic discovery off the coast of one of Wales’ most beloved beaches has left a community in mourning. Matthew Whale, a 52-year-old car sales manager from Swansea, was found in the sea near Rhossili beach on March 7, a day after his family reported him missing. Heartbreakingly, notes he left at home prompted his family to alert the South Wales Police, initiating a search involving Mountain Rescue and HM Coastguard.

Rescue teams discovered Mr Whale’s vehicle parked at Rhossili car park. CCTV footage revealed him walking towards Worms Head just hours before volunteers found him in the water. An inquest at Swansea Coroners’ Court revealed he had superficial injuries but no significant signs of trauma, leading to no suspicion of foul play. However, the coroner noted the circumstances may be unnatural, which has prompted a full inquest later in August.
