🚨 Heads Up, Everyone! 🚨

An alarming outbreak of meningitis has hit the University of Kent, with 15 cases reported, including two tragic deaths. This situation has been described as “unprecedented” by Health Secretary Wes Streeting. To combat this, a targeted vaccination programme is kicking off for around 5,000 students living in university halls in Canterbury.

💉 What you need to know:
– Meningitis B vaccine (menB) is crucial. It’s part of routine childhood immunisations since 2015, but most students aren’t vaccinated against it.
– If you’re in Canterbury, especially if you’ve been to Club Chemistry between March 5-7, you can get antibiotics from several locations, including the Gate Clinic and Westgate Hall.
– UK Health Security Agency warns this looks like a “super-spreader event.”
🗣️ Dr. Susan Hopkins of the UKHSA labelled the outbreak explosive, something not seen in her 35-year career. Most reported cases have ties to Kent, but luckily there’s no evidence of a wider spread outside the area.
⚠️ Important Reminder: If prescribed, don’t skip your antibiotics! They can drastically reduce your risk of getting meningitis.
Let’s look out for each other and keep our communities safe! If you or someone you know is in the affected area, please stay aware of the symptoms and get vaccinated if eligible. 💪🎓
Stay safe and informed, everyone! ❤️
