Sam, an engineer from Aberdeen, was an avid fitness enthusiast who spent a year rigorously preparing for this iconic endurance race. The event included a challenging 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile cycling route through the Mumbles and Gower clifftops, and a 13.1-mile run. With a love for outdoor activities like hiking, surfing, and running, he had participated in numerous events, building up to this Ironman competition.

Samantha, who tracked his progress via an Ironman app, received a devastating call notifying her of Sam’s cardiac arrest. After being transferred to Morriston Hospital, doctors informed her of significant brain damage due to prolonged oxygen deprivation. Despite intense medical efforts, Sam passed away on July 16.

Samantha blames inefficiencies in the event’s emergency response for the tragic outcome. She claims that crucial delays in retrieving Sam from the water and starting life-saving measures contributed to his untimely death. “He should have woken up from this medically. But, because of delays, he lost his life. Now our two-year-old daughter has to grow up without him,” she shared.

As the inquest continues, Samantha hopes that improved safety protocols and equipment will be implemented, ensuring no other family endures such a loss. While various individuals involved in Sam’s rescue detailed the swift response once he was spotted, she remains concerned about the initial response time and emergency preparedness.

Our thoughts are with Samantha, her daughter, and their family during this unimaginable time. Sam’s passion for life and sports will be remembered by all who knew him. ❤️
