A controversial twist in Bedwas! Plans to convert the historic St John Ambulance hall into new flats have hit a major roadblock. Caerphilly Council has turned down the proposal, citing a series of issues—most notably, the recent felling of a beloved sycamore tree. 🌳

This tree wasn’t just any tree; it played a significant role in the area’s charm. Its absence in the planning application raised eyebrows and left planners questioning what compensatory measures would replace its visual appeal. Sadly, no new planting was suggested to fill the gap.

But that’s not all—noise concerns and a problematic fence design also played into the council’s decision. The proposed boundary fence, at 1.8m high, was deemed too conspicuous, clashing with the neighbourhood’s aesthetic. And the noise assessment? Not quite up to scratch, according to the council.
Nigel Willetts, the applicant, had high hopes to breathe new life into the vacant hall by creating a mix of one and two-bedroom flats. Now, he’s left facing the drawing board once again.
