Imagine being in your 20s, active and energetic, then suddenly finding yourself in a wheelchair, struggling for each breath. That’s exactly what happened to Joanne Prescott. Sporty and full of life, Joanne’s world turned upside down when children began asking her why she was “turning blue.”
What began as nosebleeds and migraines soon revealed a harrowing truth: Joanne was battling a large congenital heart defect and severe lung damage. Her situation was so critical that UK doctors were at a standstill, unable to operate on her.
Feeling like she had signed her life away, Joanne faced an emotional rollercoaster. She was placed on the transplant list, receiving a call for a double lung transplant that fell through at the last moment. But hope sparked again when a second call came just a week later.
Describing the transplant experience as “going to hell and back,” Joanne underwent a 14-hour surgery that saved her life. Learning to breathe again with someone else’s lungs wasn’t easy, but the resilience Joanne showed is nothing short of inspiring.
Now in her 40s, Joanne looks back on her journey as a blessing in disguise. She reinvented her life, pursued a criminology degree, and now leads as a programme leader at Wrexham University, spreading hope and inspiration through her teaching.
