🌳 After six long years, the gates have finally come down around a beloved row of trees in central Swansea! 🌳

These eight majestic London plane trees, nestled beside the bustling Tesco superstore on Oystermouth Road, have been freed from their fencing confines. Originally wrapped up due to root concerns lifting the paving, the trees were nearly cut down but a local outcry with 41 objections and a petition of over 1,100 signatures saved the day! 🙌

In 2020, Tesco sought to replace them with nine new trees, but the council stepped in, protecting these leafy giants with preservation orders. Fast forward to today, and those efforts have paid off. The trees have been pruned and fitted with stylish raised pits featuring a permeable covering to keep the roots in check. 🌿
Tesco’s spokesperson shared their excitement, noting the upgraded space is now safer and more attractive for all the superstore’s customers. This transformation certainly adds a fresh touch to the area, enhancing its natural beauty! 🍃
Interestingly, London planes are a hybrid of American sycamores and Oriental planes, known for their towering heights of up to 35m and long lifespans. Imagine the stories these trees could tell! 🧐
On the flipside, before the planning drama unfolded, eight other trees were removed on Wellington Street as part of Swansea’s Copr Bay redevelopment. Fear not, though, the council promised to offset their loss by planting 17 new trees and ensuring more greenery in the adjacent new park.
Swansea’s commitment to preserving and enhancing its urban forest is a win for our city’s greenery and community spirit alike. Cheers to a fresh leaf on Oystermouth Road! 🌳✨
