A century-old toilet block is getting a chic makeover, and it’ll soon be unrecognisable. Abandoned since 1995, this Grade II listed building on Nell’s Point, Barry Island, is set to reopen as a trendy café and restaurant in May. Loungers, the popular restaurant chain, is breathing new life into these old loos by the sea.

Originally built in 1923, the toilets were left to fall apart for decades, sparking various discussions over the years about what to do with the site. After a few delays, including Covid-19 setbacks, the wait is over. Renovation began in August 2025, preserving the building’s unique, historic features while ensuring it’s safe and sound for visitors.
The new venue, Morio Lounge, offers stunning views over Whitmore Bay and boasts a 4,000 sq ft space brimming with character. You can look forward to a chilled, home-from-home vibe, delicious bites, and drinks to unwind with from morning to evening. The menu promises all-day brunches, tapas, salads, and burgers, with plenty of vegan and gluten-free treats as well.

With a reputation for bringing people together, Loungers is ready to make its mark in Barry, adding to their 22 other sites across Wales. This laid-back café-bar will have something for everyone: board games, toys for the kids, and even goodies for your furry friends.
Opening Wednesday, May 13, Morio Lounge is all set to be the new community heart by the waterfront. Swing by, soak up the views, and enjoy a meal with loved ones – it’s all about making sure everyone leaves with a smile. The transformation journey of a 100-year-old restroom into a modern-day haven is almost complete. Barry Island, get ready for something special!
