In a surprising twist ahead of the upcoming Senedd election, Andrew Barry, a former Independent councillor from Merthyr Tydfil, has pulled out as a Reform candidate. Barry didn’t hold back, criticising the party for overlooking local hopefuls in favour of former Conservative figures. He claims the party is sidelining local talent and says he’s “desperately disappointed” for residents who deserve representation from someone truly of their community.

The selection has sparked some controversy, as Reform’s line-up features Jason O’Connell, a former Conservative and now Reform’s lead in the Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr race. With Gareth Thomas and Steve Bayliss also in the running, Barry warns Reform’s choices might not sit well with locals who’ve already experienced political shifts.

According to Barry, Reform was initially attractive as a fresh alternative to the established political scene of Labour and Plaid Cymru. However, recent developments have left him disillusioned. Barry’s words paint a picture of a party struggling with its identity, potentially disconnecting from grassroots support in the valleys.
Reform remains silent on Barry’s public criticism, except for a party insider who assured that all candidates went through the same selection process. With the elections on the horizon, it remains to be seen how these internal conflicts will affect Reform’s success in the Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr constituency.
Do you think local candidates should be prioritised, or is experience from outside fair game too? Let’s discuss!
