In a shocking case heard at Cardiff Crown Court, 28-year-old Thomas Serpell from Aberdare has been jailed for 12 months after sending sexual messages to a nine-year-old boy. Serpell asked the child to be his “boyfriend”, expressing a desire to “see him naked”. After sending these deeply disturbing messages, he instructed the young boy to delete them and keep it a secret from his mum.

The messages left the child feeling “confused and uncomfortable”, with significant emotional impact. Fearful and increasingly isolated, the boy has been struggling with anxiety, skipping meals, and having difficulty sleeping. Sadly, there are also concerns about self-harm.

Serpell, who initially denied sending any messages, later admitted to engaging in sexual communication with a child. Despite claims that his actions were influenced by epilepsy, Judge Paul Hobson rejected this excuse, emphasising how frightening this experience must have been for the young victim. “Epilepsy does not cause people to sexually offend against children,” stated the judge, dismissing Serpell’s attempt to downplay his actions.

Alongside his prison sentence, Serpell is subject to a 10-year restraining order, Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and must adhere to sex offender notification requirements.
