🔴 Ever wondered about the true colour of Castell Coch, the iconic fairytale castle nestled in the lush woods near Tongwynlais? Well, wonder no more! After some serious detective work with paint samples dating back to the 1880s, experts have unearthed its original hue. 🎨

Unbeknownst to many, this whimsical castle, designed by William Burges for the third Marquess of Bute, was originally adorned with an orange shade of red. Over the years, countless repaints had drifted far from this vibrant tone. But now, thanks to architectural paint researcher Lisa Oestreicher, “Castell Coch Red 2025” is bringing it back to its former glory! 🌟

Dr Kate Roberts from Cadw, the heritage body that maintains the castle, shared her excitement: “It’s immensely satisfying that future visitors will see the castle much as Burges intended.”
Alongside restoring this stunning colour, conservation architect Michael Davies noted the uncovering of original medieval pink/orange mortars, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
If you’re planning a visit, prepare to see Castell Coch in a new light—it’s going to be just as enchanting as ever! 🏰✨ #FairytaleCastle #HistoricWales #CastellCochRed2025
