Mr. Harries, a pallet worker from Swansea, had been camping near the Loughor Estuary before this heart-breaking incident unfolded. During an inquest held in Llanelli, coroner’s officer Malcolm Thompson revealed that Mr. Harries’ injuries were “consistent with being struck by a train.” Further examinations found him to have lethal levels of amphetamines in his system—a substance known to elevate risk-taking behaviour.

Police have treated the circumstances surrounding the accident as “unexplained” but ruled out foul play or third-party involvement. It’s surmised that Mr. Harries might have encountered two separate trains that morning, adding complexity to the investigation. Unfortunately, no CCTV footage was available to clarify the exact sequence of events.

Assistant coroner Paul Bennett concluded that the accident was indeed unintentional, stating, “There was no suggestion that Matthew would have deliberately put himself in this position.” While the incident is profoundly distressing for Mr. Harries’ family and friends, it’s a sobering reminder of the dangers around railway lines.
