Dutch Delight: On-Duty Cop Caught Importing Psychedelic Fungi from Abroad

A South Wales police officer found himself in hot water after being caught trying to import magic mushrooms from the Netherlands. Ryan Llewellyn, aged 41, was discovered by his own colleagues when a customs officer intercepted his parcel, which contained 24.2 grams of psilocybin packed into 18 capsules. The intercepted package was replaced with a “dummy parcel” and delivered to him by a police sergeant posing as a delivery driver.

Llewellyn, who joined the force in 2008 and later the dog section, accepted the parcel at his Glynneath home and was swiftly arrested. His phone uncovered that he had searched whether buying these mushrooms was illegal, despite claiming he thought they were mushroom truffles.

In court, he was convicted of attempting to evade the importation of a Class A drug. The court heard of his previously good character and significant mental health struggles, which his defence argued led him to consider microdosing as self-medication.
