Competition intensifies to restore balance in popular Welsh beach facing over-tourism crisis

🏖️ Exciting news for your coastal adventures! Morfa Bychan Beach, famously known as Black Rock Sands, is gearing up to fully reopen next week after a series of crucial upgrades. Known for its picturesque views and unique drive-on sand, the beach had to tackle the challenges of over-tourism, which led to some chaotic scenes with thousands descending during peak times.

🚗 To make your visit smoother and safer, Cyngor Gwynedd has been busy since February, implementing an enhanced traffic system. Expect a widened access road, a brand-new footpath for pedestrians, improved signage, a fresh barrier system, and better disabled parking. The focus? Creating a high-quality, welcoming arrival area that elevates your visitor experience.

⏳ Whether these improvements will prevent cars from getting stuck in the sand or being caught by the tide remains to be seen, but they’re a promising step forward. Last year saw around 30 vehicles needing rescue, so here’s hoping for smoother rides ahead!

🚜 Local heroes like Dafydd, who often helped tow vehicles to safety, can’t emphasise enough: if you’re stuck, dial 999. Better safe than sorry!

🚌 While you wait for the reopening on April 1st, you can still access the beach via a diversion through Beach Road, Morfa Bychan. Parking fees remain the same—£8 for cars, £16 for caravans and motorhomes. Blue badge holders, enjoy half-price entry after 4 pm!

📅 And don’t forget, season permits are available from April. Permanent Porthmadog residents enjoy special rates too, making those sunny days more affordable.

Let’s look forward to a season of sun, sand, and seamless beach trips! ☀️🚐
