Ever imagined a different Cardiff? Well, decades ago, the city almost underwent a transformation that would have left it unrecognisable today! Plans under the banner “Centreplan 70” proposed bold changes to the heart of the Welsh capital. Imagine Cardiff with towering skyscrapers, new bus stations, and even a dual carriageway right in front of Cardiff Castle!

These ambitious concepts included demolishing beloved buildings and homes, filling parts of Cardiff Bay, and replacing historic spots with concrete blocks. The proposals even had intriguing ideas like an underground road through Castle Street, walkways covering much of the city centre, and even a massive escalator leading up from Mill Lane!

While some elements of this daring design made it through the pipeline, like the pedestrianisation of Queen Street and parts of the city’s entertainment district, most of this vision remained just that—a vision. The economic woes of the 1970s played a part in shelving these plans, turning out to be a blessing in disguise for Cardiff’s cherished historic character.

But Centreplan’s echoes are a fascinating peek into an alternate city’s history, where innovations tried to meet visions of a “modern” urban space. Thankfully, Cardiff retained its unique blend of the old and the new, which many of us love today.

What do you think, Cardiffians? Are you glad these plans hit a roadblock, or would you have welcomed a sleek, modern twist? Share your thoughts! 🏰🏙️
