On December 23, 2024, as Aaron was out with his family’s labrador, tragedy struck. Wyke, 28, was dangerously driving 34mph in a 20mph zone when he hit Aaron, who was wearing a high-visibility jacket. Despite 100m of clear visibility, Aaron was thrown from the windshield and found in a nearby pond. His dog, still attached to its lead, was left in the road.

The community launched an immediate search, but tragically, Aaron could not be saved. Forensic evidence later revealed fibres from Aaron’s jacket on Wyke’s car.

Wyke, who worked for a local Chinese takeaway, was arrested the following day. He claimed he didn’t know he’d hit someone and remained silent during police interrogations.

In court, Aaron’s family shared heartfelt tributes, painting a picture of a wise, adventurous, and well-respected individual whose loss is “unrecoverable.” They expressed their grief and described Wyke’s actions as “unforgivable.”

Defence argued that Wyke, described as neurodivergent with no prior convictions, panicked and lied about the accident. Yet, Judge Paul Thomas KC concluded that Wyke cruelly chose to evade responsibility, sentencing him to 4.5 years in prison with an 8-year driving ban.

This tragic event reminds us of the fragility of life and that dangerous driving has devastating consequences. Aaron Jones was a cherished husband, father, and friend whose absence will forever be felt by those who knew him.
