Attention Cardiff shoppers! There’s a buzz on Cowbridge Road East, and it’s not all positive. The council’s recent parking rule shake-up has traders a bit rattled. What was once a comfortable two-hour free parking now shrinks to just 30 minutes before charges begin. Yikes! 😟

Local business owners are feeling the pinch. Yagub Jalloh from Jah Beauty says, “Thirty minutes doesn’t cut it for a proper shop. Customers are rushing off now!” The beauty supply store sits conveniently near Severn Road and Grey Street car parks, making parking crucial. With less time for browsing, businesses worry customers might start skirting the area altogether.

Mike Ashwin from The Toolbox Canton isn’t too thrilled either. “Customers used to linger for hours, enjoying a coffee while waiting for a key cut. Now, they’re in and out,” he notes, lamenting the logistical nightmare these changes impose on stock deliveries. And Zohaib Hussain of Zero Plus Fish and Chips, who heads the Cowbridge Road East Traders Association, echoes the sentiment: “We’re pushing back. We won’t stand by as our businesses get squeezed!”

But the council’s not backing down just yet. They point out that over half of the public backed this plan during consultations, aiming to cover car park operation costs. Even with new charges, they argue, it’s still cheaper than in similar cities.

As this parking drama unfolds, the traders promise to continue their fight. What do you think? Is this a sensible move for Cardiff, or are local businesses getting a raw deal? Let us know your thoughts! 🛍️🚗💭
